RCT 14-19 Learner Voice Event

By Hannah Griffiths

On March 25th at the University of Glamorgan was the Learner Voice event.

The aim of the event was to show awareness to young adults about the variety of ways of learning and also the opportunities that were available for them.

There are many different ways of learning and getting on the right path to succeed in a career. Many 14-19 year olds where happy with their subject choice in school and said that there was a variety of subjects to choose from, from Maths to Law. One thing that concerned students was that they were not getting enough information about their choices.

The event started with a dance performance by Rhondda Cynon Taff Community Arts PAK Team.
Rhondda Cynon Taff Community Arts PAK Team worked with a group of young people over 4 days at Treherbert Youth Centre, to produce a dance theatre piece for the “Learner Voice” event. They used the “Learning Commitment Statement” as the stimulus and together they created the dance performance ‘Life’s game.’

The performance was based on 4 themes ; “Achieving Our Dream” – individual stories based on their dream jobs, “Stepping Stones” each stone takes you in a new direction leading you through the pathways of your life, “What if?” the problems and obstacles you come up against and will deal with, “With your Help” with the right support and guidance you will achieve your dream.

The day then, followed on with 5 Workshops. The Workshops included Screen Printing, Social Media, Drama, Creative writing and Debating. The workshops were for the students to express their voice through writing, performance or drawing. The students then presented what they had learned from the day.

The day showed that Rhondda Cynon Taf needs to provide more career information for young people through their education in school and outside of school for them to succeed in their career.
It also showed that Rhondda Cynon Taf needs to ensure that young people can access the information that they need.
