The Wolfpack And Their Quest for Gold

50 miles across the Black Mountains!

An intrepid group of boys undertaking their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – aka ‘The Wolfpack’ – have just successfully completed a challenging journey across the Black Mountains area of the Brecon Beacons as part of their Gold DofE Award Expedition.

The five boys did not all know each other before undertaking their Practice Expedition in the western Beacons area in July, but became firm friends and stormed across the mountains while demonstrating excellent teamwork abilities and physical stamina.

The going got tough at times – including Connor’s intimate involvement with a bog; some large and painful blisters on most feet, unpleasant chafing, and some very steep climbs to summits – but the Pack maintained a Positive Mental Attitude, and kept their morale high with songs and games along the route. They also investigated the water features in the area – reservoirs, lakes, waterfalls, rivers and streams – and gave an informative and interesting presentation of their findings at the end of their four-day long adventure.

They have developed valuable abilities as a result of their experiences, including tenacity, tolerance, understanding of others’ strengths and weaknesses (and their own); communication, organisation, effective planning, confidence, as well as skills such as navigation with map and compass, campcraft – and plenty of fresh air and exercise!

The Expedition Assessor (Ray O’Neil) was very impressed with their performance, and was proud to have them as representatives of RCT DofE – a fine example to others. Very well done, boys!
